How to Determine the Level of Care for Patient Transfer

Community EMS has developed a Transportation Pyramid to assist you in making patient transfer decisions. Please refer to these guidelines before scheduling any transportation.

Every patient and situation is different. We’re here to help you make the best transportation decision possible when you are ready to schedule a transfer.

MICU (Mobile Intensive Care Unit)

  • Paramedics - ACLS Certified
  • Ventilator Capability
  • External Pacing Abilities
  • IV Medication Infusions
  • Pulse Oxymetry
  • Automatic Blood Pressure Monitoring
  • Thrombolytic Therapy (if actively infusing, there must be a physician or RN present during transport)
  • Balloon Pump Transport Capabilities
  • Unstable/Critical Patient Transports

ALS (Advanced Life Support)

  • Paramedics - ACLS Certified
  • Cardiac Monitoring
  • Infusion Pumps
  • Advanced Airway Management
  • Medication Monitoring and Administration
  • Multiple IV Medication Infusions

BLS (Basic Life Support)

  • Emergency Medical Technicians
  • Basic Airway Management
  • Monitor IV Infusions (Standard fluids only, no medications)
  • Standard First Aid Equipment
  • Oxygen/Suction

Bariatric Transport Unit

  • Able to transport up to 1500 pounds
  • Available 24/7
  • Increased patient safety and comfort

Lab/Courier Service

  • Speciman Transportation
  • Stat Labs
  • Drivers Trained With Current Handling Procedures
